If you're particularly observant, you may notice something new on the blog. Need a hint? Look to the right of the page. See it now? Yep! I uploaded a new headshot of myself!
This might not seem like groundbreaking news, but it's somewhat of a big deal to me. Basically, I don't like pictures of myself. Lol. I'm sure there are plenty of others who share that sentiment! So because I hate having my own picture made, I'm really proud of myself for creating new content in the form of a professional headshot! AND this photo was taken in France by my best friend as we toured Chateau Versailles. It's pretty much the best headshot ever. That smile? It's genuine because...well...France.
Why Professional Headshots are Important
I definitely should not have waited a few years before updating my online presence. Professional headshots are hugely important, but even more so if you own your own business. If you're marketing your brand, you're marketing yourself. Consumers don't like to shop sight-unseen, so obviously it's a good idea to show them the goods (not ALL the goods-- your face and shoulders should suffice, lol). Let's explore a few reasons why headshots are a crucial element to your business.
First Impressions Matter
Chances are your customers are finding you online these days. Your personal branding is like the cover letter of your digital resume. Customers probably already know WHAT you do if they're searching for you in the first place. What they really want to know is WHO you are. A professional headshot is as important as a firm handshake that says, "Hello. I'm amazing. Let me tell you why." Without a good first impression you won't earn the chance to sell.
Social Media and Consistency
When you have a nice headshot you're able to create a cohesive brand by using that photo across all social media platforms. This adds credibility and professionalism to your brand. With that said, you should hire a photographer who has a style that fits your overall aesthetic. My last professional headshot was fine, but it wasn't shot or edited in a manner consistent with my light and bright photography style.
Updating Your Brand
It's critical to keep your brand up-to-date and current. Your headshot should be an accurate and flattering representation of you are right NOW, not who you were 5 years ago. That old headshot I told you about? Yeah, I was like 40 pounds lighter. UGH! A few months ago I had become pretty self-conscious about it and pulled it from my website because I was worried that brides I met for the first time in person were expecting a much thinner version of me-- the version on my website. Umm, embarrassing! As a photographer I should have no problem keeping my headshot updated. If you're not into having your photo taken as often as so many in the creative industries do, try to update your headshot at least once every 12-18 months (or any time your appearance changes dramatically).
Invest in Your Business
There's no excuse not to have a nice, professional headshot as a business owner. I know that now. If you're in the market for one, you can hire me, or you can hire another photographer who matches your style. Just get it done. It could really be a game-changer for your business. We spend so much money investing in our brands, from websites and logos to marketing materials. But in the end, the heart of your brand is YOU.
